Fine Arts

The Visual and Performing Arts, because they encourage creativity and self expression, require self discipline, and develop self confidence, are essential components of the Northbrook curriculum.

Visual Arts instruction includes: Studio Art, Sculpture, Digital Photography, PhotoshopArt, Sewing/Costuming, Graphic Arts, Cartooning, and Studio Art Club. Each spring there is a Student Art Show within our annual Variety Show.

Performing Arts instruction includes: Ballet and Hip-Hop Dance, Band, Rock Band, Beginner Group Strings, Advanced String Ensemble, Chorus, Show Choir, Fall Theater, Spring Musical Theater, Theater Tech, and Public Speaking. We host three performances a year. In addition, we offer music lessons during the school day through a joint business partner with Mobile Music, which brings into Northbrook outstanding professional instrumental and voice instructors for private lessons.

  • Starting in 2007, we offer students a monthly arts award to recognize individual achievement, creativity and/or dedication to the arts.

  • In 2008 Northbrook Academy added a new Music Studio complete with a full size Yamaha digital piano that is connected to a computer workstation that runs modern mixing, arranging and music production software.

  • Northbrook has three full size pianos and a lightweight portable piano for use in instruction and practice.

  • Students are have the opportunity to use their study time to practice at school.

"Northbrook is full of music! I don't know any other school that has students that are freely singing and playing songs during recess, at lunchtime and at dismissal."

Because many of our Arts classes are electives, a student with a strong aptitude for the arts is able to spend as many as 9 hours a week or more in arts classes. Despite this opportunity, we don't consider Northbrook an "arts school" because that same student may also spend 10 hours a week or more involved in athletics. At Northbrook, it is all about spending time trying new things and encouraging the discovery and pursuit of an individual's interests, abilities, and passions.

Many art students from Northbrook Academy have gone on to pursue more seriously their passions in their chosen high schools. Such students graduate Northbrook with a well developed portfolio and have been sought after by competitive private high schools.

"... I love delivering the pizzas to Northbrook. The place is alive with music and it is wonderful to hear the students singing and playing so joyfully."

"I used to be so shy! But I tried theater at Northbrook and discovered how wonderful it is to play a character and to be part of a team. I found my voice and I learned to love to singing and acting. I have a lead in my high school play right now and want to continue to study theater in college. None of this would have happened to me if I had not been at Northbrook where everyone supported you when you tried something for the first time."
